The aggravation of the geopolitical conflict and the imposition of anti-Russian sanctions had a restraining effect on the retail lending growth in H1 2022. In H2 2021, stabilization of the macroeconomic situation contributed to the recovery of banks’ lending activity, while the quality of the loan portfolio remained intact. However, the growth of outstanding debt and high indices of debt burden of bank borrowers forced the Central Bank to take measures aimed at cooling the market of consumer lending to prevent further accumulation of risks.

Key words: Russian banking sector, retail lending, past-due debt, Bank of Russia.
